Week 1: Inspiration for Genre

My partner and I chose to work with the genre of drama for our film opening project. We chose this drama because it is very versatile and can take elements from other film genres, yet almost always portrays an interesting and cohesive storyline. Many prevalent drama films have distinctive film openings that set them out from the rest. Successful film openings provide viewers with meaningful perspectives, giving them context that further allows them to understand and appreciate the upcoming  occurrences of the film.

One drama film that sparked my interest was the 1997 film "Titanic" starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. The film follows the story of a young couple who met on the ill-fated ship. The opening scenes include a much older Rose reflecting back on her time on the ship. The director of this movie chose to begin the film with a reflection on the upcoming plot because it provides viewers with a context of the history and timing of the film's occurrences. The following scenes portray a dark and gloomy mood, something that foreshadows the events about to occur throughout the film. The opening scenes of this film make it a very prominent film in the drama genre. They allow the viewers of the film to understand why the events that transpired throughout the plot were so consequential, and why they impacted Rose for a lifetime.

Another classic drama film that I find very inspiring is "Forrest Gump." This movie has a very distinct opening in which a feather is followed from the sky to the feet of the main character. Not only do these shots give the viewer a perspective of the character, but they help viewers establish the setting and surroundings of the character in their minds. Also, in the opening scenes, the way in which Forrest interacts with the feather and his other belongings helps viewers gain perspective on his character. The scenes in the opening of this film carry out the purpose of adding meaning, perspective, and value to the main character, Forrest Gump, and his surroundings.

Another famous drama film with an impactful opening is "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." Released in 2008, this movie provides a new perspective on the Holocaust, portraying a forbidden friendship between the son of a Nazi commander and a Jewish boy living in a concentration camp. The opening scenes of the film are very significant, emphasizing the flag of Nazi Germany and the swastika. The beginning of the film portrays WWII Germany to be a playground-like environment for German children, playing uplifting music and portraying happy lives. However, contrast is shown when later scenes in the opening show Nazis forcing Jews out of their homes and into concentrated areas. These scenes show the true panic and fear felt by Jews when they were first experiencing the Holocaust. The opening scenes of the film set up a very meaningful plot for the rest of the film, allowing the viewers to experience the emotions of the film in a worthwhile and consequential manner.

I chose the drama genre because prevalent movies in the genre often portray very meaningful lessons that come as an overall benefit to society's viewpoints when they become popular. Through the creation of impactful film openings, film viewers are given an invaluable understanding of the foundations of the film's plot, and an important understanding of the film's meaning.
